From which we make our furniture
We say that IKEA METOD kitchens are modular because they are made up of a limited number of structures. There are three types of METOD modules depending on their size and position:
- Base units: floor-standing units that reach up to the worktop.
- Tall units or columns: floor-standing units of great height.
- Wall units: furniture hanging on the wall without touching the floor.
For a correct installation, we recommend to take a look at our METOD® furniture fixing guide.

Within each category, there are multiple options for lengths, widths and depths. Below, we detail them for you.
Base units
⤡ 60 cm
The kitchen base units have a standard height of 80 cmhave a standard depth of ⤡ 60 cm because this measure allows to properly accommodate the sink, the hob and provide a comfortable work surface. In addition, it is the ideal depth for countertops, which are usually of similar width, ensuring aesthetic and functional continuity.
This depth also allows the installation of pipes, drains and electrical connections without compromising storage space in drawers and cabinets.
In terms of height, the base units measure ↕ 80 cm, and with IKEA's standard 8 cm legs, they reach ↕ 88 cm. To this is added the countertop, whose standard measurement is 2 cm (although some porcelain can be 1.2 cm), resulting in a total height of ↕ 90 cm, which is the standard in most kitchens.
The options for base cabinets vary in width:
-
- ↔ 60 cm: The standard size for some appliances, such as hobs, ovens, microwaves, and sinks. A ventilated version is available for these cases. Shelves or drawers can be installed.
- ↔ 80 cm: Offers more storage space or accommodates larger appliances. A ventilated version is available for these cases. Shelves or drawers can be installed.
- ↔ 40 cm: Perfectly adjustable. Shelves or drawers can be installed.
- ↔ 20 cm: Ideal for bottles or spice racks. Shelves or a pull-out drawer unit can be installed.
- ↔ 30 cm: Ideal for bottles or spice racks if you have a bit more space. Shelves or a pull-out drawer unit can be installed.

- With ventilation
Both the oven and the refrigerator need the cabinet to be ventilated to prevent overheating. For this purpose, IKEA has provided these structures with cutouts and ventilation grilles.
- 20x60x80 cm 30x60x80 cm
- 40x60x80 cm
⤡ 37 cm
However, there are options for base units with reduced depth of ⤡ 37 cm, such as those offered by IKEA, which allow you to play with the design and create more compact configurations.
It is important to note that these cabinets do not allow for the integration of appliances such due to their shallower depth.

Tall units
On the other hand, the tall units maintain the same depth of ⤡ 60 cm because they are designed to integrate standard-sized appliances, such as ovens, refrigerators or microwaves. In addition to their structural function to house these elements, tall units also serve as pantry-style storage, providing great organizational capacity without sacrificing countertop space.
Their tall and deep design makes the most of the verticality of the kitchen, maintaining a uniform aesthetic with the base units and ensuring convenient access to integrated appliances.
There are two heights of wall units: ↕ 200 cm and ↕ 220 cm. If you would like to go a little higher because your room allows it, IKEA offers the possibility to go up to 280 cm, adding a 40 or 60 cm top cabinet. All of these cabinets are ventilated by default.
Here's how to create the configurations:
↕ 200 cm
For a height of 200 cm, there are three options:
-
- ↔ 60 ⤡ 60 ↕ 200
- ↔ 60 ⤡ 60 ↕ 200 ventilated cabinet if it will house an oven or an integrated fridge
- ↔ 40 ⤡ 60 ↕ 200
- Two cabinets: ↔ 60 ⤡ 60 ↕ 140 + ↔ 60 ⤡ 60 ↕ 60 on top: This setup is uncommon but can be used if you have a HÅLLNÄS integrated fridge.
- 60x60x200 cm
- 60x60x200 cm w/ ventilation
Both the oven and the refrigerator need the cabinet to be ventilated to prevent overheating. For this purpose, IKEA has provided these structures with cutouts and ventilation grilles.
- 40x60x200 cm
- 60x60x140 + 60x60x60 w ventilation
As in the case of the base units, IKEA offers the possibility of having tall units with reduced ⤡ 37 cm depth, only in height 200 cm, but not in the 220 cm unit. This furniture can not accommodate appliances.
- 60x37x200 cm
- 40x37x200 cm
↕ 220 cm

- + 60x60x60 cm top cabinet
This 60 cm cabinet can be added to the 220 cm unit to reach a height of 280 cm
Wall Units
As for the wall units, their standard depth is ⤡ 37 cm to offer an ergonomic use without hindering the work area. This depth makes it possible to store crockery, food and kitchen utensils without the cabinets protruding too much, which could hinder access to the worktop or generate a feeling of visual overload.
In addition, their lighter weight is a key factor in safety, since wall-mounted cabinets require a solid fastening to ensure their stability over time.
