Guide for Machining Hinge Cups

My order has doors without hinge holes

If you check your parts list and see that some are specified as "unmachined", it means that the door comes without pre-drilled holes for the hinges. In this case, your installer will need to drill them on-site. We do this when we don't know the exact height at which the hinges should be placed, such as:

  • Doors of a custom-made furniture
  • Non-IKEA washing machine doors
  • Horizontally opening doors: in this case, no machining will be necessary, as the IKEA hinges are screwed to the cabinet and door
  • On customer's request

Steps to Follow:

  1. Get a hinge boring drill bit. Standard hinges require a 35mm cup hole.
  2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to measure the correct hinge placement. If it's a custom-made piece of furniture, use IKEA's pins as a reference.
  3. Perform machining with an electric drill and drill bit.
  4. Attach the hinge to the door, then secure it to the furniture.

If you need to cover any previously drilled holes, we recommend using plastic trims such as these for 35 mm cups.
