The Role of Panels and Fillers: How to Choose the Best Option
Before diving into the available options, it's important to clarify the differences between side panels and filler strips:
-
Side Panels: These cover the full height and width of the interior IKEA structure, providing a complete decorative finish. They are available in different widths depending on the METOD or PAX unit they are meant to cover.
-
Fillers: These are narrower, with a width of ↔12 cm. They serve a similar decorative function as panels but are used when the furniture is placed next to a wall. They can be installed in two ways:
- Longitudinally along the cabinet body, with the edge visible, if the gap to the wall is just a few centimeters.

-
- Perpendicular to the furniture, extending the board’s finish, if the gap between the wardrobe doors and the wall is larger. Refer to our fillers installation guide for this option.
Wardrobe Design Options: Functionality and Aesthetics
Depending on the style and functionality you’re looking for, you can choose from different configurations that will affect the final visual result of your project.
Wardrobe Without Side Panels
If you choose not to use side panels, the sides of the IKEA wardrobe structure will remain visible. IKEA offers a range of interior structure colors, allowing you to select the option that best matches your CUBRO door fronts. This is a functional option that can also help reduce the overall wardrobe cost.
Wardrobe with Side Panels on Both Sides
If your wardrobe is placed away from walls, you can install side panels on both sides. This way, the IKEA structure will be fully covered, and aesthetically, the wardrobe will be framed with a visible edge on each side.
Wardrobe Next to an Existing Wall
If your wardrobe is positioned against a wall on one side or fitted between two walls, it is advisable not to place the IKEA structure completely flush against the wall. This could impact functionality, as the existing wall might not be perfectly straight, making it difficult to open doors and interior drawers.
To ensure optimal and smooth door operation, we recommend installing a filler between your wardrobe and the wall.
Wardrobe Integrated into Plasterboard
Another option is to build a plasterboard frame to fully integrate the cabinet modules. Our main recommendation is to create a frame around the IKEA PAX structures, including an additional 1 cm margin in all dimensions to allow for a smooth installation.
This way, the doors are flush with the wall, creating a smooth, modern finish without the need for side panels. This solution is ideal if you want a completely built-in closet with no visible decorative elements.
