Corner units in kitchens

Kitchen corners can become useful storage areas if the right unit is chosen

In L- or U-shaped kitchens, corners often raise questions about how to make the most of the space. While it may seem hard to optimise, there are several specific solutions depending on the type of unit and how you plan to use it. Our Design Experts team will help you find the best solution for your kitchen.

Base Units

1. Basic 88 cm corner unit

This is the most compact corner unit, with a corner door that works with the hinges included with the unit. Its base allows for installing a rotating carousel system, ideal for easy access to pots, pans and other utensils.

  • Dimensions: ↔88 x ⤡60 x ↕80 cm
  • Recommended accessories: IKEA rotating carousel (two trays)
  • Advantages: Easy interior access, makes use of the corner
  • Assembly: To complete this piece of furniture, CUBRO manufactures two doors that will be joined together and will open in an L-shape to the side of your choice. Only one door has a handle, since the hinge hole aligns with the mechanism.

2. 128 cm base corner unit

This is IKEA’s solution for maximum corner storage. It should not be trimmed, so it's only suitable if you have enough space.

  • Dimensions: ↔128 x ⤡60 x ↕80 cm
  • Recommended accessories: IKEA pull-out insert or shelves
  • Advantages: Offers some flexibility in positioning relative to the neighbouring unit, easing installation

  • Assembly:
To complete this unit, CUBRO provides:
    • A movable door, fixed to the cover filler supplied by IKEA in the centre of the unit
    • Two fillers which must be installed in a cross shape: one following the movable door, covering the fixed white IKEA front, and the other perpendicular, after the neighbouring unit's door. These panels can be cut to fit your space. Refer to IKEA’s instructions for more details.

3. Fillers to cover the corner

If your corner angle is too tight to fit a unit, the best solution is to skip the corner and install cover panels over the space. These can be mounted from above using standard corner brackets or IKEA-supplied fittings.

Wall Units

False corner unit

For wall units, there is a solution that we call false or fake corner unit. This allows you to use either base or wall units in the corner by installing a special hinge: the UTRUSTA corner fitting.

This fitting is screwed to the top and bottom inside the unit and allows for hinge mounting with easier access. As with the previous case, this solution includes:

  • A fixed front panel (hidden)

  • A movable door, attached to the corner fitting in the centre of the unit

  • A cross-positioned filler following the door of the adjacent unit. This can be cut and adjusted to fit the available space.

You can use this solution with almost any wall unit depending on the width and height of your kitchen layout.
