Explore side panel, strip, and filler options to customise your wardrobe. Choose from visible IKEA structures or recessed finishes for a design that enhances both the functionality and aesthetics of your space
When designing a custom wardrobe, side panels, strips, or fillers play an important decorative role, though they are not structural elements. Depending on the style and functionality you seek, you can choose from several configurations that will influence the visual finish of your wardrobe.
Difference between panels, strips, and fillers
Before delving into the available options, it is important to clarify the differences between side panels, strips, and fillers:
- Side panels: Cover the entire height and width of IKEA’s interior structure, providing a complete decorative finish. They are available in two widths: 39 cm and 58 cm, and two heights: 201 cm and 236 cm, allowing you to tailor them to the height and size of your wardrobe.
- Strip: Narrower, at a width of 12 cm, and also available in two heights: 201 cm and 236 cm. They serve a decorative function similar to that of the panels, but are used when the wardrobe is adjacent to a wall. As the IKEA structure is hidden by the wall, it is not necessary to cover the entire side. What is seen is the edge, just like on a side panel.
- Filler: The same piece as the strip, but used when the gap between the wardrobe doors and the wall is larger. The visible part is the same colour as the door fronts, allowing for a continuous and aesthetically pleasing finish between the wardrobe and the wall. It is an ideal solution for disguising small spaces or gaps between structures and walls. The filler is standard and measures 12 cm, although you can adjust it during assembly.
Options for your wardrobe: functionality and aesthetics
- Wardrobe without side panels: If you decide not to use side panels, the sides of the IKEA wardrobe structure will remain visible. IKEA offers a range of colours for the interior structures, allowing you to choose the option that best matches the fronts of your CUBRO doors. This option is functional and can also reduce the overall cost of the wardrobe.
- Wardrobe with side panels on both sides: When your wardrobe is placed away from the walls, you can install side panels on both sides. This way, you will cover the IKEA structure and, aesthetically, the wardrobe will be framed by a visible edge on each side.
- Wardrobe adjacent to an existing wall: If your wardrobe is attached to one side of a wall or tucked between two walls, it is advisable not to completely adhere the IKEA structure to the wall. This could affect functionality, as the existing wall may not be completely straight, which would hinder the opening of interior doors and drawers. To ensure optimal and comfortable opening, you should install a strip or filler between your wardrobe and the wall. If you opt for a strip, the edge of the board will be visible; if you choose a filler, you will see the same colour as the fronts. This choice is purely aesthetic.
- Wardrobe integrated into plasterboard: Another option is to build a plasterboard casing to fully integrate the wardrobe modules. This way, the doors are flush with the wall, creating a smooth and modern finish, without the need for side panels. This solution is ideal if you want a completely built-in wardrobe without visible decorative elements. If you prefer the edge to remain visible, you can add decorative strips for an additional touch.
- Conclusion: The choice between side panels, strips, and decorative fillers depends on the design of your space and the characteristics of the room. Consider both functionality and aesthetics to achieve the perfect finish for your wardrobe.
